RCSD Students Show Overall Gains in State Assessments

Brandon - Results on state assessments released by the Mississippi Department of Education show that the Rankin County School District had gains in overall proficiency for every grade level content area from the 2020-2021 school year to the 2021-2022 school year. Gains of 10 percent or more were seen in third grade English Language Arts, seventh grade English language Arts, English II, third grade math and Algebra I.

Proficiency from the 2018-2019 pre-Covid school year to the 2021-2022 school year showed gains in 9 out of 17 grade level content areas including:  in English Language Arts - fifth grade, sixth grade, seventh grade and eight grade; in Math - fourth grade, fifth grade, eight grade and Algebra I which had a 14.2 percent gain; Science - fifth grade. In areas that had a decrease in proficiency from 2018-2019 to 2021-2022, the decreases were less than 4.5 percent.

In the 2021-2022 school year, all proficiency percentages were above 50 percent, which topped the 2019-2020 percentages when two grade level content areas were below 50 percent. 

The state administered a new U.S. History assessment in 2020-2021 and this assessment was scored on a different proficiency level scale from other content areas prior to 2020-2021. The RCSD students scoring proficient or advanced on this assessment increased from 64.8 percent in 2020-2021 to 80.7 percent in 2021-2022.

RCSD finished in the top 10 in the state in proficiency in fourth grade English Language Arts (9th), fifth grade English Lanugage Arts (5th), seventh grade English Lanugage Arts (5th), fifth grade math (5th) and fifth grade science (5th). RCSD grades that finished in the top 20 in the state proficiency among the more than 140 school districts in the state include:  fourth grade math (13th), sixth grade math (12th), seventh grade math (12th), eighth grade math (15th), sixth grade English Language Arts (15th), eight grade English Language Arts (15th), eighth grade English Lanugage Arts (14th) and eight grade science (17th). The remaining grade level content areas finished among the top 50 percent of all school districts in the state. They include:  third grade English Language Arts (21st), English II (22nd), U.S. History (30th), third grade math (35th), Algebra I (65th) and biology (37th).

"I am very proud of our team," RCSD Superintendant of Education Dr. Scott Rimes stated. "Although this data only tells part of our story, you can see our students, teachers and administrators did a fantastic job. If you begin to piece all our students' and schools' accomplishments together, there is no question the Rankin County School District had a super succesful year. I'm so excited to see what the future holds."
