BRANDON, Miss. — Rankin County is taking a significant step forward in strengthening healthcare access and services for residents as Mississippi Baptist Health Systems assumes the hospital lease in Brandon currently operated by Merit Health Rankin.
The Rankin County Board of Supervisors recently approved the lease assignment, positioning Baptist as the future operator of the 134-bed hospital located on Crossgates Boulevard. The transition marks the beginning of a new chapter for healthcare in Rankin County and comes with a planned $70 million investment in facility improvements, technology, and expanded services.
County leaders say the decision reflects a long-term commitment to ensuring residents have access to high quality, sustainable healthcare close to home.
“Healthcare is one of the most important pieces of infrastructure a growing community can provide,” said Rankin County officials. “This partnership represents an investment not only in a hospital, but in the health and wellbeing of current and future generations of Rankin County residents.”
The transition follows an agreement between Baptist Memorial Health Care and Community Health Systems for Baptist to acquire the hospital’s assets and assume operations. Merit Health will continue to provide healthcare services in the Flowood area, while Baptist focuses its investment and resources on strengthening care in Brandon and the surrounding region.
As part of the agreement, Baptist has committed to offering employment opportunities to all active Merit Health Rankin employees in good standing, helping ensure continuity of care and retaining the experienced healthcare professionals who serve the community every day.
The investment will also bring Baptist’s nationally recognized healthcare network and resources to Rankin County. Planned enhancements include implementation of the Epic electronic health record system, expanded telehealth capabilities, improved patient access, and integration with Baptist’s extensive physician and specialty care network.
Baptist Memorial Health Care is one of the nation’s largest not-for-profit healthcare systems, operating hospitals across Mississippi, Tennessee, and Arkansas. Since 2016, Baptist has expanded its presence throughout Mississippi through strategic growth, acquisitions, and partnerships aimed at improving healthcare access and outcomes.
