24 Rankin County Schools named Military STAR

BRANDON - The Mississippi Department of Education has named 61 schools as the state's first Military Star Schools. This designation recognizes schools that have made a significant commitment to supporting military families and children of service members.

Of the 61 schools from all across the state, 24 are in the Rankin County School District.

Military Star Schools must meet specific requirements that adress the unique needs of military students and families. These include appointing dedicated school liaison for military families, providing student-led transition services and peer support, ensuring professional development for staff to respond to the needs of military students and families, and publically recognizing service members and thier families.

The Military Star School is designed to help schools to respond to the educational and social-emotional challenges military-connected children face during thier transition to a new school and keep them on track to be college, workforce and life-ready.

The RCSD schools that received this designation are, in alphabetical order: Brandon Elementary, Brandon High School, Brandon Middle School, Florence Elementary, Florence High School, Florence Middle School, Highland Bluff Elementary, McLaurin Elementary, McLaurin High School, Northshore Elementary, Northwest Rankin High School, Northwest Rankin Middle School, Oakdale Elementary, Pelahatchie Elementary, Pelahatchie High School, Pisgah Elementary, Pisgah High School, Richland Elementary, Richland High School, Rouse Elementary, Steen's Creek Elementary and Stonebridge Elementary. 

All Military Star Schools will be recognized at a ceremony at Brandon High School on April 18.
